(13 ago. 1899, Londres, Inglaterra–29 abr. 1980, Bel Air, Cal., EE.UU.).

Director de cine estadounidense de origen británico. A contar de 1920 comenzó a trabajar en la sucursal londinense de una compañía cinematográfica estadounidense, y en 1925 fue promovido a director. Su película El enemigo de las rubias (1926) discurre sobre una persona común que es atrapada en eventos extraordinarios, un tema recurrente en su cine. Su obra exhibió una fascinación por el voyerismo y el crimen, y probó ser el maestro del suspenso en películas como El hombre que sabía demasiado (1934; nueva versión 1956), Treinta y nueve escalones (1935) y Alarma en el expreso (1938). El tenso drama sicológico Rebecca (1940), fue su primera película producida en EE.UU., y evidenció su virtuosismo en filmes posteriores como Naúfragos (1944), Recuerda (1945), Encadenados (1946), La ventana indiscreta (1954), Vértigo (1958), Con la muerte en los talones (1959), Psicosis (1960), Los pájaros (1963) y Frenesí (1972).
